Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or sometimes the lowermost opposite or whorled. Margins entire. Short-petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in terminal, bracteate racemes or solitary in the leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes equal to unequal. Corolla bilabiate, upper lip overlapping lower lip in bud, the tube saccate or gibbous near the base, the throat closed by a prominent palate. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs; filaments often dilated toward apex; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells; ovule placentation axile; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Capsules asymmetrical; 1 cell much larger than the other; opening by 2 terminal pores; the smaller cell opening by a single terminal pore or irregularly splitting. Seeds numerous; the surface with irregular; longitudinal; corky ridges; tuberculate; sometimes 1 face smooth.
